Speed Handicapper™ Installation of Microsoft™ Components

Speed Handicapper™ v5.0 will install and run with all versions of Microsoft Windows™ from Win98 to the present.

When installation errors occur, it is invariably related to the information on this page. Please walk through the steps below, but if you need assistance, feel free to contact us through any of the support links below.

No matter what version of Windows you use, we encourage you to routinely check the Microsoft Windows Update Site for security patches, updates and service packs specific to your operating system. "Windows Update" should appear as a menu item in your main Windows Start Menu. Or Click Here.

Speed Handicapper™ v5.0 uses numerous Microsoft™ data access components that may or may not be previously installed on your computer. If you have installed Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, you probably have all of the components required by the Speed Handicapper™ program—but not always.

The Speed Handicapper™ installation program automatically detects the presence or absence of two required components: DCOM and ADO. If DCOM is not present, the installation stops and prompts you to install it. (See DCOM below.) If DCOM is already installed, or after you have installed it and restarted, the installation program tests for the presence of your ADO version and, if it is absent or lower than ADO 6.0, it automatically installs it.

Important: not only older machines may need additional MS components. Windows XP and later copies of Win ME ship with ADO v2.7+ which no longer includes MS Jet data providers (ODBC), so Microsoft now provides several specific installation packages to install Jet, depending upon which MS operating system you use. If you install the Speed program on Windows™ ME or XP with ADO 2.7+, ADO will not overwrite itself with a lower version—HOWEVER—in doing so, it also will not install the necessary Jet drivers. The Speed Handicapper™ program will install on these machines, but then present you with cascading error messages when you first try to access data. This is not the speed program; it is the absence of ODBC drivers. (See Jet info below.)

DCOM - Windows™ 95 and 98 ONLY
If Speed Handicapper™ installation stops with a notice that DCOM is not present, go to the Microsoft™ download site for DCOM at the address below. Select the correct version to match your operating system and follow the instructions for installing it. After DCOM is installed and you have restarted, resume the Speed Handicapper™ installation.

All versions of Windows™
If Jet [or ODBC] is not present
The Microsoft "Jet Engine" is a database component utilized by many programs, notably, Microsoft Access™. It may be present or absent on your machine, depending upon what Microsoft™ components have been previously installed. If it is absent, the Speed Handicapper™ program will install properly, but will generate cascading error messages when it attempts to access your racing data. This indicates that Jet needs to be installed.

Microsoft™ offers a number of versions of Jet for download from the link below. Select the exact match for your operating system.
